@ImHereForAGoodTimeNotALongTime: hair is dead pal it aint livin it dont got nerves

Guest, December 26th, 2017, 10:19 am     Reply

Not only Assistant's hair, the whole story between Wallis and Harold seems to be either a special case, or a demonstration of why using magic on someone really shouldn't happen. Also, I suppose that given what recentmy happened to Wallis, his disappearance act also counted as this.
I'm curious how this will unfold *w*

@Guest: Purple lampshaded earlier that both Harold and Wallis seem to bend or outright break these rules.
Though, he does explain that Wallis "burned dye into her hair," whatever that means.

Purp is doing magic without a wand again
Sheesh, stop breaking the laws of magic buddy.

@ImHereForAGoodTimeNotALongTime: Perhaps by signing the contract which had a statement allowing for Wallis to change his assistant's hair Assistant effectively waived that right for that specific case?

Maddimoo (Guest), December 26th, 2017, 11:01 am     Reply

Wait, so how would the first law work for people in stratoverse? Or purple. Or wallis...??????

colonelsnivy, December 26th, 2017, 12:37 pm     Reply

@Maddimoo: Purple is most likely a special case, like Wallis, except Wallis can actually access his wand through his hat.

Meanwhile, citizens of Stratoverse have high magic potential, thus not requiring a hat or wand.

Guys, I think I remember it being mentioned that Assistant's hair was a magic trick, as in a slight of hand, not really magical. But there seem to be other incidences of these rules being broken. I think we're about to learn how that is possible.

Darth AWQ, December 26th, 2017, 1:24 pm     Reply

So... 1. You get magic but only when you're "Mature" enough to use it safely. 2. You cannot use magic to disrupt an organic body (as oppose to inorganic robot bodies but hey I would not put it past CQ to somehow pull that off)
I'm assuming the Third Right has something to do with the Breaking of wands and what happened to Cakegirl right?

TripleAAA (Guest), December 26th, 2017, 2:27 pm     Reply

So if I understand the second rule right, Wallis and Harold's no arm thing is what happens when you cross the rule?

colonelsnivy, December 26th, 2017, 3:03 pm     Reply

Both of them happened through levitation of the human body, so I guess so.

HamVerse (Guest), December 27th, 2017, 8:31 am     Reply

@colonelsnivy: You don't need to make someone levitate to make them fly. You just need to make the air around them do so. I suppose the invisible arm is sort of a "bug" which occurs when someone forcibly creates an anomaly. Both instances were involving Wallis's magic, so there could be different side effects depending on the cause.

Loverofpiggies, December 26th, 2017, 5:45 pm     Reply

@everyone: I will say there are definitely situations within the comic that already seem to break these laws, but I promise I have no forgotten that, and this is very important! :D

Jeebus-Crisp, December 26th, 2017, 7:18 pm     Reply
Soooo then wait?

@Loverofpiggies: Purple and Wallis would basically be breaking the laws, right? because they both have broken these laws, like? Purple doesnt have a hat to make magic (is it magic?) and Wallis made Harold "float" at least that's what we think what happened? OOF IM NOT PREPARED MY DUDE WHAT

Ninuhuju (Guest), December 26th, 2017, 11:41 pm     Reply

Theory! Wallis's magic is not turning the arms themselves invisible, it is bending the light around them so light isn't bouncing off of them; giving them the illusion of being invisible. We can only see things light bounces off of with, but if the magic is preventing light from reaching their arms, we won't be able to SEE their arms. It's like how black holes aren't actually black because black still has SOME light bouncing off, but instead they are actually invisible to the human eye because even light can't escape a black hole.

HamVerse (Guest), December 27th, 2017, 8:34 am     Reply

@Ninuhuju: Interesting, but it seems more like the invisible arms are based on an anomaly than a void. However, you do have a good point. It's possible that Wallis attempted to manipulate the effect of gravity on Harold, thus violating the 2nd law and THEN creating a void around Harold as a side effect.

Zephyrinx, December 28th, 2017, 9:40 am     Reply

@Ninuhuju: WOAH OKAY HOLD ON what's this about black holes being invisible to the naked eye?? That is- Actually really incredible, I forgot that fact about them, and very very interesting considering my theories... Thank you for this tidbit! :D

He didn't change the hair color with magic. He used his magic (not clear) to burn dye into her hair. He bypassed the law through the fact that he was controlling the dye and manipulating it- not manipulating Assistant's hair.

Polintia (Guest), December 27th, 2017, 8:26 am     Reply

Considering the fact that everyone is talking about the second law making no sense, here's my approach/theory on it -

Personally, I would assume that the S.L. (Second Law) was referring to directly harming someone intentionally. By 'directly', I mean magic in its 'pure' form, as in when it first comes out of the wand. (Could also potentially be in its 'base' form, in cases like Assistant's, Wallis's and Harold's sort of magics come into play, with multiple forms of it being presented.)

So, if you use water magic, my best guess would be that you can't exactly throw high pressure water at someone to harm them, but would be able to drown them. (It's not the water that's harming them technically, it's a lack of oxygen.) If I'm correct on that part, you could burn somebody's house down with fire magic and suffocate them with the ashes. (Yeah, morbid, I know, killing them with their own house) For the final part of the elemental magic examples, (Yeah so creative I know right?) if you had wind magic, you could blow somebody off a cliff and effectively kill them.

Sooo, where am I going with this?
Bypassing the second law is easy-peasy, and Wallis's magic is pretty unique, and could have lots of things that allow it to bypass the S.L. even more easily than other magics. I mean, we have no idea what its 'base' form even is!
So, I'm probably going to stop right here before I end up over-examining this single law.
Polintia out! (Random note in case you might know me: Yes, I am the SBP one.)

HamVerse (Guest), December 27th, 2017, 8:45 am     Reply

@Polintia: Bypassing yes, violating not quite. Wallis's magic is implied to be centered around space and black holes (yes, he does the voidy thing. Are you happy now?) and so he probably did something that...okay, I can easily visualize the action but it is essentially impossible to put it into words. Maybe I should get a major in physics, that should let me know how to explain it.
As for water: I would assume that while you can hurl water at someone to harm them, or drown them by amassing the H2O in the air and flooding their lungs, you CAN'T convert the water already inside their body into anything else. This would probably make healing and assassination much harder as you can't materialize a toxin/antidote that is water based.
Fire you should be correct, you cannot set someone on fire but you can set everything AROUND them on fire , such as the air, a leaf flying overhead (it is no longer alive), the floor beneath them (as long as it is not grass), or even their house like you said. But you can't set their body on fire.

HamVerse (Guest), December 27th, 2017, 8:46 am     Reply

If you cannot use magic directly on ones body or that of a living creature, then how does Petunia's magic work?
Unless her magic is creating plant golems, which would make some sense.

BUT WHAT ABOUT HAROLDS ARMS? ISN'T THAT USING MAGIC ON ONES BODY? things are going to be answered now! yay!

Guest, December 27th, 2017, 4:17 pm     Reply

@ImHereForAGoodTimeNotALongTime: actually while hair is not living it is still technically part of a living persons body. the real reason is in "Wallis and purple - page 19" purple said that the coloring of assistants hair is actually just a charlatan parlor trick of burning dye in her hair. Apparently in high-school Wallis did it a lot.
