I'd say maybe try kicking him off the cloud... but he can fly.

So the 2 have not talked much, but likely she will sooner or later ask about the loopholes in magic they use to fly without seemingly a wand or a hat.

This has been hinted at for quite a while now, all the way back in the 5th chapter (when they go to the birthday party and Rylie meets Purple), there Purple gave his book to Rylie asking that maybe after reading she can also understand how he basically used magic without a wand or hat in sight.

This was also brought up when he explained the rules of magic. When Wallis said that he thinks it a load of bull since there are a whole nation of flying people Nim did mention that they just found a loophole, tho did not elaborate on it.

Should Rylie have read the book and come to a few conclusions she could ask about Nim about it as well.

While I like this idea probably it will be just a relatively short talk to get more background on Nim, before the whole group is dropped into some kind of storm, either metaphorical or into a quite literal one.

@Renrobt: I think they use magic on their hair (when it turns into a poofy cloud). Hair isn't alive itself, so I guess it should work?
But I have no idea how that could help them fly...

Guest, January 3rd, 2019, 5:05 pm     Reply

i believe it’s a thing of controlling the air directly around them to keep them afloat.

Little more Theorizing (sorry got a little long)

@(insert username here): Well personally I think the way this works is that they somehow redefined what is their hats and wands. A magical cloud as a hat and maybe air or body part (like a hand) or something seemingly incorporeal as the wand.

We only see them use magic when they have cloud on so this could likely be a condition for their magic as well. Tho that does rise the question that how do they summon the cloud as that also would need magic.

Also we did see Indigo use a normal hat and wand so we know they have it, tho interestingly we saw neither of their hats during the date (Indigo's, and the Judge's, I think here name was something like Ylil), not sure if it is customary, but a little weird that magic is pretty much everything yet they went anywhere without the very conduit through which they cast it.

Aside from that segway, he was using magic on the date and a thing that stuck with me was that he took out his wand without his hat. Could have been that he just took it out and left it in his pocket. But that still does not explain how he used magic because for magic you need both the hat and wand. That was one of the rules of magic.

This is why I think the loophole is redefining what is your hat and wand.

In case of Indigo during the date he had the wand out but he had no hat. But what if we say he defined his hat as the cloud he formed? Then he can always use magic as long as it's on.

Also this kinda ties in with another theory of mine: that hats and wands can change over time. It makes no sense that something that is the reflection of someone's self would stay static. Rather I think it to stay so because people believe they know how their hats/wands look and thus due to this influence of belief they stays as such.

Rather than a static hat/wand as long as people are ready to believe that their hats/wand take a different form these tools could very well warp to such forms. This does explain how everyone's hat fits them so well, such a Petunia's hat being a flower bud and Seaweed's a jellyfish. (yes they would be looking for such hats by default but likely it did shift to be more comfortable + suitable before and after they got it.)

Also this could very well maybe explain why they can summon their hat with seemingly no way to cast magic. If they define their hats as magic clouds that hover around their head. A cloud can be very different depending on circumstance and environment, like from a full on opaque cloud to a nearly perfectly transparent haze. They are all basically the same but in a different environment and density. Should they use their magic to alter that, or just their very definition of their hats they could have a hat (and by proxy a wand) that could very well seemed to have appeared out of thin air, as that is almost pretty much what they are defined as.

Anyways sorry for the long post if any of you read it. I really unloaded my major theories here.

P.S.: oh and how they fly: probably just manipulating the air around themselves.

Indigo, along with the other colors, apparently do not need Hats. Or alternatively inherently know overly complex loopholes that no one else can copy.
Ylil is an Inversian; even if she can use magic as a result of her surgery, she probably does not have a hat. If she does, then she presumably keeps it stored nearby (say, in a briefcase) so that the Inversian populace continues to trust her.

Renrobt (Guest), January 5th, 2019, 4:12 am     Reply

Well this is where it is questionable, we seen both Red and Blue having hats. While we have yet to see Purple and Yellow's hat we can assume that they only turned the color after getting the hat because we have seen Purple before he got his magic, which we can assume meaning him getting his hat.

Also them using magic without hats, well not sure. We only seen 2 times (if we don't count Purple using magic as he did state he is using loopholes) that they used something similar to magic without a hat or wand present. When Yellow changed the color of the flower and when Indigo put on Red's gloves and it turned to his color.

Probably the connection here is rather than them using magic, that the fabric/plant reacts to them in a way, signifying that they are connected to the mancers somewhat. Likely there are very few such materials, and to most they would just look like regular plants/fabrics.

And about Ylil, she is probably also aware of the loopholes, considering how she said that the occasional people who go there see how "great" it is and "donate" themselves to the cause. Probably torture and indoctrination but that's a different question. If she has magic (which likely she does, as it kind of was hinted) she is likely aware of at least a few loopholes that they could get out of them.

So if she has magic, she probably needs wands and hats just like a stratoversian, but they somehow hide it the loopholes (which I think is done by redefining what they consider their own hats and wands).

@Renrobt: Apparently do not NEED Hats, not do not HAVE hats.
And as for Inverse, I think it is less a matter of "they torture the people they find" and more of a "when you die (regardless of the cause), your body defaults to 'science'".

Renrobt (Guest), January 8th, 2019, 3:45 am     Reply

@Guest: My point about the hats was that not all of them seems to know the loopholes you mentioned, tho we did not see Blue or Red use magic so it is not provable either way. In essence all the colors we have met except for Red and Blue do know loopholes by either their upbringing (Indigo) or figured it out by studying the nature of magic (Purple). Questionable where Yellow falls because we really don't know how old is she, tho likely she is ancient (tho again that is a whole different can of worms I don't want to open here) and had time to figure out, though could have learnt it as well. Tho if nothing else she could have learnt the loopholes in Stratoverse.

And well about the torture and indoctrination: While it was never outright stated, but in the exact words of the Judge:

"Foreign travelers like to sneak into my country. For fame or foolishness, I do not know. But most foreigners, when faced with Inverse's glory, choose to donate themselves to our cause. Medical science has benefited greatly from the contribution."

Considering how in the date we learnt that how strict they are expected to act unless they be shunned, it is not too much of stretch that in such a seemingly oppressive society they would not be against torture and indoctrination, especially those they deem outsiders.

And likely to learn about magic, they would need the people alive. While transplants might work from the dead, to study and maybe acquire the magic from the foreigners (especially the loopholes) they need their cooperation, one way or another.

But yes I do agree that likely all bodies are also donated to science on death, as that does seem in character for them as well.

@Guest: The Steamverse territories are part of Gloomverse, on the mainland. Perhaps they could simply be cutting across the Bay of Colors to get there, but it doesn't make much sense other than "We don't want people to see us."
